Oyi is the name of a popular stream in and outside Abba and also the name of a powerful deity in Abba. In the community, the stream is more popular than the deity because of the unique nature of the stream whose source, now on a hill at “OFIA OYI” Abba and whose source was relocated by nature about 880 years ago to the present –day source from a present day homestead point at NKWO ABBA
The mystical relocation of the source was, according to oral tradition, due to defilement by a leper who took bath in the stream.
The spring water sourcing from the hill top bounded by four very heavy rocks that could compete with the size of a three bedroom bungalow, flows from the source at Abba, passing Awkuzu and Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area to Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area joining Anambra River at Otuocha. At the confluence point at Otuocha, one will still see the clear difference between the Oyi waters and Anambra River waters. Hence,Oyi stream is popular among the people of Awkuzu,Nteje, and Nsugbe who also call and refer to the stream as Oyi,and understand that they have no claims over the stream. They also appreciate same. It is not surprising, therefore, they choose to name their local government OYI LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL.
